“Goal setting is about moving toward something not running away from something.” ~ Barbara
How wonderful it is to continue this Journey together as we start the New Year filled with new hopes, dreams and plans. This journey is a mission to live our best selves, to realize our talents and to learn how to successfully use them. I truly believe we have begun something great together and I have so enjoyed your comments and emails and personal messages telling me about the WORDS or phrases you have selected to brand your year.
I love ‘my word’ choice, Intentional, because every time I say it out loud or just think it. It empowers me to stay on track to accomplishing my mission for this year. The Mantra, “I am Intentional” speaks loudly to me to ‘do it now!’ or reminds me of the statement “Don’t put off until tomorrow what you can do today!”
It is exciting to read your word choices… DRIVEN, BELIEVE, EXPLOSIVE, BAM, NON-NEGOTIABLE, ACT WITH PURPOSE…. just a few of the wonderful words and phrases you have chosen as your declaration for the NEW YEAR and the conversation continues…
Recently I was chatting with a friend who is in the direct sales business and she told me she was having a difficult time in finding a word to brand her year. I asked her what word motivated her to action, a word that empowered her to move forward to making her year great.
She responded by telling me what she did not want in her life. A job she wanted to leave and other things she wanted to stop. I realized she was approaching this process from the wrong vantage point.
“Goal setting is about moving toward something not running away from something.” – Barbara
You don’t set a goal to get away from something. Successful goal setting is in moving toward something not running away from something. When you are focused on things that you don’t want you keep yourself stuck in the sameness of those thoughts. You actually attract more of what you don’t want.
This year Taylor Swift had a song Shake! Shake! Shake! It was about shaking it off…. We need to Shift, Shift, Shift. Shift your thoughts to focus on what you want to attract in your life; focus on the new career, a better position, better relationships, or better finances.
My shift was to stop thinking about what I did not accomplish last year and instead become intentional about what I planned to accomplish this year. That’s the Shift! And as you shift, you will realize while you may not have reached your goals, there were many important experiences that will make you who you are! Fail forward to success as they say, use what you learned and make it work for you to succeed with more acumen the next time!
This year I’d like to continue to share my journey with you as I SHIFT my focus from dwelling on what I did not accomplish to putting my effort into Intentionally Soaring to Success. So far in the first few days of this New Year I have already booked a number of training events. Plans are already in the works to create some training products and I am working on the release of a very special project.
Wow what a difference a few days can make when you Shift your Focus.
Shift, Shift, Shift! And let me hear your progress as we Journey to Success together.

“I love my word choice, it has changed my mindset to the many possibilities that I always dreamed of but never allowed myself to release from within. When I think and say my “word” it brings me joy, makes me smile and propels me to move immediately instead of thinking “but what if” and never following thru. Thank you Barbara, It’s my “Thursday Director’s Meeting” … BAM !”

I love your blogs,. I believe we in Mary Kay and I’m sure in all Direct Sales are looking for “intentional specific training”. Which is what I believe your insight offers. How can so many who know the technical “how to” hold themselves back from getting into action? I have not had the pleasure of your training except for one powerful seminar speech last year! I would love to learn more about your “system for moving women into DIQ and through to the finish line. AND for developing those new Directors.
