The other day I came across a copy of a monthly newsletter that I had published for my team. What caught my eye was the newsletter’s title: Reflections of Success.
Reflections! I took a moment to reflect on my journey to Leadership. I thought of the mentors I had and some of the messages they shared with me. Many of their comments were shared in training sessions but those that really stayed with me that were imprinted on my mind, were often caught rather than taught. Caught in conversations or gleaned from spending time with them.
What I learned was success is all about Attitude…
- Accentuate the Positive – Eliminate the Negative … Don’t complain, blame or criticize. Only speak of positive things.
- It is all about what you think and the people who make up your Circle of Influence? Who do you listen to? Emulate and model?
- Act with Confidence – Doubt and Do Without, Believe and Achieve. It takes courage to succeed … dare yourself to greatness … keep stepping out of your comfort zone.
- Don’t be afraid of change. Be ready and willing to change what you are doing when necessary… if it is working keep doing it but if it isn’t then CHANGE IMMEDIATELY!!!
- Have a Positive Expectation. Be in it to win, to learn to become a Pro. … Know your worth!
One of my mentors loved this poem … and I share it with you as its message made me understand her conviction in having an “Expectation” for success.
I bargained with Life for a penny,
And Life would pay no more,
However I begged at evening
When I counted my scanty store;
For Life is a just employer,
He gives you what you ask,
But once you have set the wages,
Why, you must bear the task.
I worked for a menial’s hire,
Only to learn, dismayed,
That any wage I had asked of Life,
Life would have paid.
This poem offers us an awareness to the belief of “Ask, and ye shall receive”. If we were to ask for a low wage because we believed that we don’t deserve more, life will very surely pay us a low wage. However, if we dare to ask for bigger things and are willing to shoulder the responsibilities, then just as likely we’ll get what we’ve asked for.
So what bold moves are you willing to take? What will you bargain for? Success is always within your reach but first you have to believe in yourself and in what you are doing.
I learned you cannot be tentative … you can’t have an attitude of ‘What If?’. To succeed you need to be Bold, Confident, and Focused. I like to call that being Bodacious! A Bold Abundant Thinker!!!!
Some other Leadership Tips I learned from my mentors in working with your team….
- Talk in terms of the other person’s benefits when guiding them. It’s about their goals not yours.
- People need to have a ‘WIN’ before they become frustrated.
- Teach people to focus on Possibilities not Limitations.
It is…… ALL about Attitude!
“Whatever the mind of man can conceive and believe, it can achieve. Thoughts are things! And powerful things at that, when mixed with definiteness of purpose and burning desire, can be translated into riches.” – Napoleon Hill
