Tis’ the season for success.

December 3, by Barbara Sunden

Its here, its certainly here…The Holiday season!  There is evidence of it is everywhere starting with street decorations and houses adorned with colorful holiday lights. Stores have festive displays and holiday songs filling the air.   Songs about Joy, songs that sound Joyful and songs that create a feeling of Merriment.

I love this time of the year, even with the hustle and bustle to get everything done.   I guess I could sum it up in one word…FUN!

Speaking of fun, I had an interesting experience at a meeting recently during a training exercise. It was training on effective speaking and how to keep the audience engaged. …. How to make the  learning experience fun. The truth in most cases is that people do not want to be educated, they would rather be entertained so the challenge is always to deliver the training in a fun way.   This particular exercise was about having an awareness of the different personalities of people.

The facilitator asked us to describe, Hershey, Dove & Godiva chocolates as people.  I immediately not only thought this was fun but I had a picture in my mind of each of the popular chocolate favorites. The exercise got me thinking!

To me the Hershey represented someone fair-minded, balanced. Not flashy but reliable; a homebody. The Dove chocolate, I imagined as a person of high quality and elegant, not at all snobby but rather classy.  The Godiva immediately appeared to me as someone of royalty. A well known person but not for celebrity…. But known for pedigree.  How would you describe the different chocolates if they were people?

Did you see the lessons in this exercise?

  1. First, as a leader it is important to know,  we lead individuals; Unique in many ways …but all of value.
  2. People want to have fun so make sure your training is fun as well as educational.

Yes the season of merriment has begun, be creative as a leader so your team members will continue to keep their eyes on  business and not only focusing on the Holiday festivities.  Make your meetings fun! Your challenges Joyful!

Deck the Halls with bows of holly !!!!   This is the season to be Jolly but as a business leader it is also the season to lead your team to success.
