I recently read a song parody on the song, “What does love have to do with it?” The fun thing was the lyrics were changed to……“What does age have to do with it? The song parody was about the amazing singer, Tina Turner.
What’s age got to do with it (got to do with it )
What’s age, but a chronologic notion.
What’s age got to do with it (got to do with it )
I can restart – if I have the devotion….
I think we can all agree that today, age is more a matter of ATTITUDE than of a birth date.
This reminded me of a time when I met with a few friends for lunch (a birthday celebration)…as I looked around the table I realized each of us represented a different decade. The youngest woman there was in her 40’s then one in her 50’s another in her 60’s, one in her 70’s with the eldest in her 80’s.
How amazing to see women of so many varied ages gathering together ….. and the question that came to mind was, “What does age have to do with it?” We had so much to talk about and loved being together to share our plans and experiences. We spent the time discussing the news, movies and T.V. shows, fashion and travel destinations…. We chatted non- stop till it was time to leave. Each of us was comfortable with their age….and the common denominator of this varied age group of women was their ATTITUDE.
Woman, today, are more active, youthful looking and certainly are future thinkers realizing that a career change can be made at any age… you are never too young or too old! So age really has nothing to do with setting goals.
The ‘KEY’ is to be ready;
- For change,
- Curious about what else is out there.
- Brave-hearted to take action
“You are never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream.” – C. S. Lewis
I have found people often questioning me on my deep desire to create another business at retirement age. I guess they are looking at this stage of life in a stereotypical way; a rocking chair and a retirement community.
However, I prefer to continue to wear my high heals…to travel, to train and mentor women. Some of the women I am privileged to work with are just starting out and others find themselves ready to transition to a new career, or to advance to a new Career level but no matter the age or type of change I have found everyone needs Direction and Guidance and encouragement.
I would tell the young person;
- Be curious.
- Do what you can, where you are but also embrace opportunities that you can grow into.
- Find a mentor.
To those who are 50 plus … keep going don’t settle. Be comfortable in your own age group.
I read in an article recently by JoAnn Jenkins that stated, “50 is not the new 30, and 60 is not the new 40. IN FACT 50 IS THE NEW 50. Today so many women are fearless, and amazing, yet, realistic ….. they know their needs are changing and while they may not always like it, they face up to it. …. These ladies and millions of other women who are 50+ are changing the conversation about what it means to age without fear…… all of us want to be defined by who we are, not how old we are!”
March is National Women’s History Month. How fortunate today that so many young women and girls can hear the stories of other women who blazed a trail in life. What a wonderful opportunity for a younger woman to be mentored by an older women. Someone who can show them possibilities for the future while showing them how to balance family and career.
Women are truly the role models for the generations to come. They are the leaders and change agents; the trail blazers as well as the backbone of the family. Woman in Leadership are the influencers…they are the dreamers, the builders and the keepers of the flame of life where values and authenticity are modeled. Where courage abounds!
- Diane Nyad at age 63 successfully swam from Cuba to Miami without a shark cage. This was her 3rd attempt and many people in her life thought she should not do it because of her age but she did it anyway! What an inspiration!
- Julia Child in an interview once said, “I was 32 when I started cooking up until then I just ate.”
- Earnestine Shepherd, a 74 year-old body builder. Didn’t start working out until she was 54.
- And actress Betty White continues enjoying a successful acting career at age 92.
“WHAT DOES AGE HAVE TO DO WITH IT???”
Young or old it does not matter…. Dream your dreams. Turn them into a burning desire and then ACT on them. Live the life you love!
And as the lyrics from the Tina Turner parody stated…
“What’s age got to do with it (got to do with it) What’s age, but a chronologic notion.
What’s age got to do with it ( got to do with it )
I can restart -if I have the devotion….
